Now, we knew carnitasย and an ice coldย cervezaย combine beautifully. Weย hadn’t consideredย carnitas and a robust red wine paired just fine. The East LA Meets Napa event in Los Angeles definitely changed our minds.
Set in the enclosed garden patio, AltaMed’sย sixth annual East LA Meets Napa event,ย which is easily one of the best Latino fundraisers in town and claimed to beย one of the nation’s most uniqueย food and wine festivals celebrating the Latino community’s contribution to California’s multi-billion dollar industry.ย

The event paired Latino-owned or operated wineries from the Napa Valley region with Latino-owned or operatedย restaurants in Greater Los Angeles. The patio bustled withย more than 1,400 people attendingย (many who also were smart and took the train). Aboutย 60 plus pairing stations and live music by Jose Rizo’sย Mongorama set the stage for a perfect evening.ย

This year’s event featured the flavors of Michoacรกn, considered by some to beย Mexico’s soul food. We read somewhere that last fall, UNESCO named Mexican cuisine an intangible cultural heritage of humanity (France is the only other country so honored). Michoacรกnย helped to get Mexico recognized with its own rich culinary heritage, which blends indigenous roots with inputย from later settlers supported by fertile soils, lakes and rivers.ย ย

“We are proud that East LA Meets Napa has evolved into one of the most popular food events in Southern California,โ said President and CEO Cรกstulo de la Rocha,ย whoย mixed and mingled among the crowd proudly.

In a release he said, Napa wineries with Michoacรกnย ties that poured at the benefit included Black Coyote Chateau, Cejaย Vineyards,ย ย Mi Sueรฑoย Winery, Rios Wine Company, Robledoย Family Winery, Shafer Napa Valley Wines and V. Sattui Winery.ย ย

ย
ย Some 60 stations featured everything fromย tamales, tortas, moles and many other dishes.ย ย Stand out tastings came from restaurants like Loterรญaย Grill’s Michoacรกn-styleย green mole, made with squash seeds and greens, tacos from Guisados filled with duck cooked carnitasย style, a savory corn flan with quinoa from Rivera, and Setรก’s chilled avocado soup.

Stay tuned to LatinoFoodie as we’ll beย featuring various restaurants, chefs, recipes and wines from the East LA Meets Napa event. Thank you AltaMed for a GREAT time. ย
